The Bhavnagar city was founded by Bhavsinghji Gohil and earlier it used to be a flourishing port. However, all these kinds of activities deteriorated with time. Before being famous as a ship breaking yard, Alang was a renowned place in Bhavnagar which boasted of flawless shorelines. Alang witnesses a semi arid climate just like the other cities of Bhavnagar. The summers are extremely hot and arid and similarly winters are cold and dry.

The monsoon time starts in the month of June and continues till October. Summer time starts in March and continues till the month of June. The minimum temperature during summer months is about 25 degree Celsius and the maximum temperature remains around 40 degree Celsius. June month receives heavy rainfall and the weather remains hot and humid during this time.

From October to January is the winter season when the minimum temperature drops down to 12 degree Celsius and the maximum temperature is around 32 degree Celsius. Since Alang is situated in the vicinity of sea, it has a quite humid climate. October to May is the best time to visit Alang.

According to the census of 2001, the total population of Alang was 18464. The population of females and males are 18 percent and 82 percent respectively. The avg. literacy rate of Alang is 62% which is greater than the national avg. i.e. 59.5% with 11 percent female literacy and 89 percent male literacy. The population occupied by individuals aged below 6 years is 7 percent. Hindi and Gujarati are the main languages that are generally spoken in Alang.

Transport in Alang

Alang is nestled in the south east area of Bhavnagar. There is a plethora of airlines offering flights to Bhavnagar right from Surat and Mumbai. Bhavnagar is excellently connected with rail network. One can get to the place via Western Railway Line. The distance between Bhavnagar and Mumbai when reached through Ahmedabad is 761 kms and if the place is approached through Viramgam it is 788 kms.
